England have unveiled their 14-member squad for the first Test match against India, set to begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. Ben Stokes will continue to lead the side as they prepare for a high-profile clash in the World Test Championship cycle.
SURPRISE INCLUSION: JAMIE OVERTON RETURNS
One of the biggest talking points is the recall of pacer Jamie Overton, who returns to the national setup after nearly three years. Overton has just one Test cap, having made his debut against New Zealand in 2022. His return comes amid injury concerns, most notably the absence of Gus Atkinson, who has been ruled out due to a right hamstring injury sustained in the recent Zimbabwe Test.
PACE AND SPIN OPTIONS
England's pace attack includes a mix of experience and fresh talent with Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Jamie Overton forming the seam unit.Shoaib Bashir is the lone specialist spinner in the squad, retaining his place after a decent showing in the Zimbabwe match.
BATTING LINE-UP AND WICKETKEEPING DUTIES
The top order features the in-form trio of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope, all of whom scored centuries against Zimbabwe. Jamie Smith is set to don the gloves once again, having kept wickets during the previous Test.
All-rounder Jacob Bethell also returns to the fold after missing the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.

India Begins New Era With Fresh Faces for England Test Series
Shubman Gill Named Test Captain, Karun Nair Returns After 8 Years
On the other side, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already named an 18-man squad for the series, marking a significant transition for Indian Test cricket.
LEADERSHIP CHANGE AND MAJOR RETIREMENTS
With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from the longest format, Shubman Gill has been appointed the new Test captain. The tour also marks the first Test series for India without veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
KARUN NAIR'S STUNNING COMEBACK
In a nostalgic yet promising move, Karun Nair has been recalled after an eight-year absence from the national Test side. The 32-year-old made a strong case for selection with a double century for India A against the England Lions last week.
YOUNG GUNS STEP UP
India’s squad also includes promising talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, all of whom impressed in the India A vs England Lions clash with crucial half-centuries in the second innings.
